Farewell to my beautiful homeland.
Hello to the hellish unknown,
to the wide brown plains of
Van Dieman's Land,
where I'll serve to the end of my days.
All I did was to pocket a penny
from the pocket of Miss Ally Kenny,
to buy my young daughter
a birthday gift
but I'll serve 'till the end of my days.
So ne'er will I see my sons grow up,
or be asked for my sweet daughter's hand.
I'll not have a gift for her wedding
nor give my dear daughter away,
for I'll serve to the end of my days.
My poor sweet daughter cried
to see her daddy taken away.
My tearful wife and family,
a son who tried to be brave,
I'll serve 'till the end of my days.
